My Morning Routine: Naomi Kerbel, head of TV and radio scheduling for Bloomberg

Naomi Kerbel and Emmeline

We ask Naomi Kerbel – Bloomberg’s head of TV and radio scheduling and a mum-of-one – to share her morning routine. From waking up to breakfast preferences, how she chooses what to wear (little secret: she has a stylist) and her morning commute…

Naomi Kerbel lives in Lambeth in a 1960s school conversion. She’s 37 and lives with her husband Jack and her daughter Emmeline who is seven months. She is global head of TV and radio scheduling at Bloomberg. She started her career in media as a comedy actress and musician.

What time are you up in the morning?
Up at 6.30am most mornings.

And what time have you usually gone to bed?
In bed by 9.30pm, 10 latest.

What’s the minimum amount of sleep you need each night?
I need at least seven hours but since having Emmeline I’ve learnt to survive on much less.

I leave home at 7.45am and walk to work. It’s a great way to get a bit of exercise in before the day kicks off

What wakes you up in the morning?
Until very recently it was Emmeline but at the moment I wake up naturally before I hear her coo’ing away.

How do you feel?
Unless I’ve been out the night before I tend to feel pretty perky!

Would you describe yourself as a ‘morning person’?
Absolutely. I love the mornings. My husband is NOT a morning person (although with a little one he’s learning to adjust) so mornings have always been my time to gather my thoughts and potter.

What do you first do upon waking?
I’m trying to be healthier so at the moment I get out of bed, do a bit of stretching and then make myself a hot water with lemon. Then it’s time to get Emmeline up, cuddles, songs, nappy change and feeding whilst I catch up on news, emails and instagram.

Do you incorporate exercise into your morning routine?
At the weekend Jack takes Emmeline first thing so I get in a run but my exercise tends to be my walk into work.

Tea, coffee, juice, other…?
Hot water with lemon, then tea, then coffee at the office.

What’s for breakfast?
I eat breakfast when I get into the office. It’s usually porridge with a berry compote or cornflakes with ice-cold milk. At the weekends it’s a bacon sarnie or an eggy bread.

Each night I lay out my clothes for the next day so I don’t have the hassle to thinking too much about that in the morning

How long do you spend getting ready?
I am very speedy. Uber fast shower. LOTS of moisturiser (I’ve become much more pedantic about my skincare routine since having a baby). Bit of mascara and a bright lipstick.

How do you choose what to wear each day?
My little secret is that for a long time I have invested in a stylist. Clare from Miss Dress comes to my house once a year and helps me find lots of new looks from my current wardrobe. It may sound really lazy (and indulgent) but it’s really cost effective because I rarely buy new clothes (barring a good charity shop haul) as she recycles items over and over and makes them look fresh and cool.? Each night I lay out my clothes for the next day so I don’t have the hassle to thinking too much about that in the morning.

Do you work at home, or outside of the home?
Once a month or so I work from home but day to day I’m in Bloomberg’s offices in the City.

What time do you leave and how do you get to work?
I leave home at 7.45am and walk to work. It’s a great way to get a bit of exercise in before the day kicks off. I listen to a podcast or an audiobook on my way in.

How might the rest of your morning pan out?
Breakfast at my desk then calls with some of my colleagues in other offices around the world. I work in a 24-hour newsroom so we have lots of meetings planning the news for the next days and weeks.

What do your weekend mornings look like?
My husband takes our daughter and I head out for a run along the river. Since we had her we seem to be perpetually clearing up so there will definitely be some tidying away of the general detritus of life before we settle down to breakfast and the papers.

If you could design your dream morning routine, what would it be/include?
Cuddles with my daughter and my husband. Cappuccino. FT Weekend in bed. Run… eventually.
